Call for contributions to Bechdel Zine Volume 2

We are looking for contributions for the second volume of the Bechdel zine. We welcome the zine aesthetic using collage or sketches with text.

Contributions can follow the themes below, or other themes of your choosing that fit with the aims of Bechdel. All students are welcome to contribute, from Undergraduate to PhD level within the Screen School.

Bechdel aims to develop inclusive, intersectional, safe sound spaces with a focus on supporting female, non-binary and trans students who are interested in, or already working with, sound technologies.

You can read the previous issue of the Bechdel zine and learn more about past Bechdel events here: https://bechdel.myblog.arts.ac.uk/

Send one A4 landscape page or one A5 portrait page PDF at 300 dpi quality to i.plum@gold.ac.uk by 5pm Tuesday 23rd May.

Suggested themes:

Who are the underrepresented sound practitioners you would like to highlight the work of?

How do we represent unheard voices in sound?

What does an inclusive and intersectional safe sound space look, feel, and sound like?

How do we navigate developing safe, inclusive, intersectional sound spaces?

What are the possibilities in the gendering and ungendering of sound technologies?

How can we investigate the archiving of work by female, trans and non-binary artists’?

Call out for Bechdel zine contributions Volume 1

We are seeking features from BA, MA and PhD students for a Bechdel zine, to be launched in the graduate show, aiming to support 1st year BA Sound Arts and BA Music Production students who are non binary, trans or female identifying.

Bechdel seeks to bridge the gap in skills sharing for non binary, female, and trans students, and provide a safe space for discussion on overcoming the obstacles these students are more likely to face.

Each feature will be 1 double A5 page spread (landscape A4), and can include diagrams, sketches and/or text on one of the following themes. Please reflect on what knowledge or interests you would like to have received in a zine in your first year, and let me know if you would like to propose something different. Please include a quote from a female, non-binary or trans artist somewhere on the page.

  • Technical knowledge illustrated or detailed
  • Sound walks, performance and installation related to Sound Arts
  • Performance, production and engineering related to Music Production
  • Routing diagrams
  • Ideas or ethos in line with the inclusivity of Bechdel
  • Affirmations

Email i.plum@lcc.arts.ac.uk by 5pm on Friday 27th to let me know if you are interested in submitting, and which theme you have chosen.

The deadline for features to be submitted is 5pm on Wednesday 8th June, as A4 landscape/A5 double page PDF.
